Chamber music is an important part of the PRSMF. All students are required to participate; ensemble assignments are made by faculty at the beginning of the summer, and each ensemble rehearses four times a week. These ensembles will be coached on a daily basis by a faculty member. Ensembles will perform on the Chamber Music Recital Series and are often invited to perform off-campus.
As part of the core curriculum, each student receives a weekly one hour lesson with a faculty Artist. This one-on-one lesson work throughout the festival allows tremendous progress in solving technical problems that may need to enhance and learning new repertoire. Also the students participate in studio seminars in which they can work on specific topics of their instruments and repertoire.
The Puerto Rico Summer Music Festival Conductors Institute is a hands-on program focused on instrumental conducting. Emphasis is placed on the practical aspects of preparing and performing standard works. The PRSMF Conductors Institute offers conductors insightful preparation as well as real-world podium experience.
Maestro Rafael Enrique Irizarry, Associate Conductor of the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra, will lead this program. Applicants selected for the PRSMF Conductors Institute 2017 will conduct and be coached on:
- Aaron Copland: Appalachian Spring Suite (Original 13 instrument version)
- Igor Stravinsky: Suite from L'Histoire du Soldat
- W. A. Mozart: Symphony No.39 in E-flat Major, k.543
*Students must bring their own scores and are encouraged to tape their coaching sessions and their concert.
